Anomaly scan is carried out between 18-20 weeks of pregnancy. The purpose of the scan is to monitor the development of the fetal organs and identify birth defects
The 20th week is crucial for both mother and the baby, and you should never miss the anomaly scan.
Aim of the Anomaly Scan
- To monitor the physical growth and movements of your baby
- To examine each part of the fetal body (brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowel, kidneys, and limbs)
- To detect certain birth defects in your baby
- To estimate the amount of amniotic fluid
- To check the umbilical cord and placenta
Every pregnant woman should undergo this scan for the detection of abnormalities and subsequent management.
Preparation For the Anomaly Scan
- You need to keep your bladder full an hour before the test to give the best ultrasound images for high-quality images
- Make sure to drink two to three glasses of water one hour before your scheduled time for the scan.
Fetal Anomaly Scan: How Is It Performed?
- Your sonographer will apply a small amount of gel to your belly
- A transducer (wand-shaped camera) is slid over your abdomen to capture live images of your baby.
Fetal Anomaly Scan: What to Expect?
- In case of any abnormal condition or chromosomal condition, your doctor may repeat the tests for further evaluation
- Consult your doctor to plan the medical care as soon as the baby is born.
Can Anomaly Scans Detect Birth Defects?
The scan can detect various structure-related defects, such as
- Cleft lip
- Cleft palate
- Abnormal shape of the baby
- Hydrocephalus
- Septal defects in the heart
- Defects in the formation of blood vessels
A fetal anomaly scan is a head-to-toe ultrasound examination of the fetus.
Is Anomaly Scan Harmful?
NO! It is not harmful because ultrasound rays do not harm the mother and the baby. All women who are pregnant between 18 and 20 weeks should go for the scan.
